Friday Musicale devotes an afternoon to the music of composer and pianist Gary Smart, with premieres of his new chamber works. A Presidential Professor of Music at the University of North Florida, Smart is a true American pluralist whose music braids together Americana, jazz, world musics, and the Western classical tradition. He has studied with figures as varied as harpsichordist Ralph Kirkpatrick, virtuoso Jorge Bolet, and jazz master Oscar Peterson; earned fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts; and heard his music performed at the Kennedy Center, Carnegie Hall, and Lincoln Center.

This program gathers five of Smart’s works for strings and clarinet: Street Music for violin and cello; Shine for violin, cello, and clarinet; Tree Thoughts for double bass and string quartet; March for string quartet; and Strange Angel for clarinet and string quartet.

Admission: $35 general, $25 Friday Musicale members, and $15 for students with valid ID. Doors open thirty minutes before the performance.

Founded in 1890, Friday Musicale is one of the South’s longest-running music organizations, gathering Jacksonville around live music for more than 135 years.
